My name is Randy Thomas. Retired from the electronics and medical device industry as a engineer. Paying close attention to fine detail has always been a way of life for me. I now spend my time in pursuit of rainbows, german browns, bonnivile cutthrout, and brook trout. If I am not fishing, I can be found in my work shop carving, sculpting or painting.
Growing up in Idaho Falls as a young child, Yellowstone, Island Park, and the surrounding mountain rivers and lakes became my playground and later my passion. At the ripe old age of four I caught my first fish, a 7" rainbow trout on the snake river. Traveling home, no air conditioning in the 52 Ford, and temperatures nearing 90 degrees,my older brother Steve complained about a smell. Upon removing my hat while I slept, he noticed the fish I had caught on top of my head. The fish oils and juices had driped down and dried on my face cementing my eyes shut. I guess you could say that fishing was on my mind from a very early age.
As an avid fly fisherman I try to capture the thrill of a trout leaping from the water to engulf a dry fly. As most flyf isherman I had only a picture to commemorate the battle. In 2003 my father and I took a carving class to learn how to sculpture a rainbow trout. Before we could paint the fish my father took ill and shortly thereafter he met his maker. The carvings now painted sit on my fireplace mantel, a memory, a tear, my most treasured posession. I have since sculpted many of my fishing memories, paying close attention the details of ananomy, color, and habatat.
A trophy brown trout, or your sons first fish, let me help rekindle that fond memory.
Each sculpture starts out from a carefully selected piece of kiln dried Tupolo, or Basswood. From your picture I will chisel, sand and paint the fish of your memories down to the finest detail. Each scale burnt into the surface and tipped with a silver paint to recreate a fish sculpture so realistic you would swear that it is alive and hasn't quit the fight yet. Each fin carefull crafted in such a way to capture the movement. Choose a wall or pedistal mount finished in a high gloss or semigloss. A family heirloom for sure that will be passed down from generation to generation along with the embelshed stories that goes with it.
