My name is Randy Thomas. Fishing was just part of growing up for me, and a big part of my life. My father would often take my 3 brothers and me into the high Uintas on wonderfull fishing and hunting trips.
Building on my childhood memories and carving trout seems to be a natural for me. With my wifes (Mary) support, my vision has gone from a dream to a reality.
I really care about helping you hold on to the memories that mean so much . Your childs first fish, your trophy, or your dads last fish can help bring back into focus what can not be taken from you, memories.
My father and I signed up for a trout carving class back in 2003. It gave me an opportunity to spend some quality time togeather. We would spend 2 hours a night, 1 night a week for 6 weeks togeather carving. After which we would go out for a sandwich. After we carved our first trout we were going to take a class in learning to how to paint them. My father became ill and shortly there after died. The fish that we carved sat in a shoebox in my closet collecting dust. In my heart I longed to find the time to finish them.
Two years ago, I finally got the opportunity when I decidede to retire. I went into the back yard, removed the roof from the storage shed, built a second level for storage and now have the space needed fora small workshop. I brushed up with some books, took a few classes and finally got the courage to paint them. I carve a couple more fish to practice on before painting them. The fire was lit. A friend asked if I would carve a 32" sockeye salmon for him, another friend wanted a 24" brown that he released carved from a picture. The next thing I know I find myself carving 6-8 hours every day. With a little encouragement from my wife I took a big step by traveling to Montana to vist the 5 time World Fish Carving Champion Clark Schriebies for some one on one. The level of my art work jump dramatically. I have now won a few titles myself in the expert and professional divisions.
At first I had a hard time letting my work go, but with each new work the quality increased. I love doing what I do, and I would love recreatingta memory that you and your family can enjoy now, and your grandchildren will enjoy for generations to come.
